A City Once Warm

Denes McIntosh

The street sign said  “caution”, but no one seemed to care
the woman in the crosswalk just stared.
The driver of the pickup didn’t stop, he just glared
and ran her down like a drunk on a dare.

The crowd was quietly shaken by the turn of events
but it fast became little more than another accident.
They’d seen it all before, now they were seeing it again
She was somebody’s mother,
she was somebody’s friend.

Chorus:
She was somebody’s neighbor
she was somebody’s daughter
She was somebody’s sister
she was somebody’s kin.

She was somebody’s lover
she was somebody’s woman
She was somebody’s mother
she was somebody’s friend.

Indifference thick like traffic, grown far beyond reason.
A city once warm is now freezing.
There’s no time left for grief, there ain’t no changin’ of the season
Something terribly sad has come between us.

Chorus:

Repeat Verse 1:
The street sign said “caution”, but no one seemed to care
the woman in the crosswalk just stared
The driver of the pick up didn’t stop, he just glared
and ran her down like a drunk on a dare.

Chorus:

A New Day
Denes McIntosh

Morning holds the promise that a new day is upon us
for the purpose of the glory of the son
The gentle breezes seem to whisper sacred reasons
why my Jesus poured his precious love on everyone.
The silence of the summer sky serves somehow to remind me
of the wonder of the one god up above
The calm and quiet country side helps make me conscious of the time
I'm spending in the comfort of his love.

Chorus:
I will praise you Lord forever
and rejoice before your throne
I will worship you wherever
my two feet are bound to roam
I will sing and shout your glory
I will let your name be known
I will lift my heart before thee
I will look to you alone.

Yesterday has come and gone, tomorrow's in the makin'
and today I'm livin’ freely in his grace
Lookin’ for the moment when I'll see his kind and lovin’ eyes
and look upon his bright and shining face
The joy that only Jesus gives just keeps on growing stronger
as I walk a little longer by his side.
And the blessings that He brings to me
begin to be the things that he has wanted to bestow
for quite some time.

Chorus:

So many days and night I've spent in marvel of the miracles
I've seen my Lord performing for his flock.
So many ways his life has lent it's guiding light to help prevent
my feet from falling from the solid rock
His love cannot be measured by the boundaries of the pleasure
we have found to be a part of love within
But it goes beyond the strongest understanding of the fondest feelings
we could ever hope to have for Him.

Chorus:

A Solitary Candle
Denes McIntosh

Rumble, the earth shakin' it up again.
I stumble tryin' to make my way.
It's been quiet following the rain,
getting closer to the end of the day.

Visionary, what do you see out there?
Can you read the rising tide?
It's always calm beneath the wind blown sea,
beyond the reach of the sky.

Chorus:
Beyond the vision of mortal men
there's a place for the weary to rest.
It can't be found in this heartless world,
it has no earthly address.

It can't be seen with the naked eye,
there is no reason or rhyme.
Some people call it paradise,
I call it learning  to fly.

Trouble, you won't find me anymore,
I will not stumble or fall.
You can throw the world at my front door
but I won't be home when you call.

Chorus:
Beyond the vision of mortal men
there's a place for the weary to rest.
It can't be found in this heartless world,
it has no earthly address.

Beyond the vision of broken men,
behind the mask of despair
A solitary candle burning brightly again
like angels dancin' on air.

Against My Will

Denes McIntosh

I knew you in the neighborhood
you threatened to take my life.
You tried to make me think
that I would die that night.
On my own front porch
it was getting so damn late
you slammed me up against the door
and spit in my face.
You slammed me up against the door
and then you spit in my face.

I knew you in the neighborhood
but you were not my friends.
just another bunch of thugs
from the land of the living dead.
With your predatory nature
moving in for an easy kill
surrounding me like a bad disease
against my will.
Yeah, surrounding me like a bad disease
against my will.

Chorus:
Go away, I don't want to play with you.
Go away, I don't want to play with you.
Go away, I don't want to play with you.
Go away now, I don't like the way you play.

I knew you in the neighborhood
though I didn't know you well.
I saw you pissing on the wall
to mark your place in hell.
You tried to break my door down
like the devil on crack
You tagged my house to let me know
that you'd be back.
You tagged my house just to let me know
that you'd be coming back.

Chorus:

All The Aces

Denes McIntosh

Let it go,
it can't hurt you anymore.
The dogs are gone with the dinosaurs.
The snakes have taken to their dens,
the demon will not rise again.

Let it go,
it can't hurt you anymore.
It's passed you by like the winds of war.
The enemy have all gone home
to clean their guns and mend their bones.

Let it go
it can't hurt you anymore.
The wounds will heal themselves now.
You've watched the hate consume itself
Now play the cards that you've been dealt.

Chorus:
You have survived.
You are alive again today.
You're holding all the aces.

Let it go,
it can't hurt you anymore.
You've been through that revolving door.
You escaped the trap they set
And came back stronger yet.

Chorus:
You have survived.
You are alive again today.
You're holding all the aces.

You are alive again today.
You're holding all the aces.

American Boy

Denes McIntosh

Chorus:
The night is darker even than it seems to be
if you listen you can hear it screaming quietly.
mercy given sparingly, water given free
I'd rather have my freedom than your water.

American boy got your Camels on the dash
got your girl sittin' cozy
got your friends in the back

American boy got your foot on the gas
doesn't matter where you're goin'
never look at the map.

Chorus:

American boy haven't got enough cash
put your card in the machine
and you'll be outta there fast

American boy get your food on the run
a whopper with cheese,
double fries and you're gone.

Chorus:

American boy, micro brew at the bar
got all your favorite movies
on the VCR.

American boy gettin' further in debt
get away from all your troubles
on the Internet.

Chorus:

American boy, you say "life is a drag
and you'll be feeling better
with a $20 bag".

American boy just livin' for today
don't worry bout' tomorrow
might not be here anyway.

Chorus:

American boy don't need to get involved
all the homeless are accounted for
the problems are solved

American boy close your eyes to the need
mama's sending you a check
you won't be livin' on the street.

Chorus:

Ami’s Song

Denes McIntosh

Just a little bit of New York City
little bit of a West Coast girl
not what you would call commonly pretty
a quiet beauty like a rare and priceless pearl.

I met her at a party on the back porch
she had a little hippie thing goin' on
liked my beads, we had an intellectual discourse
I liked the way she rose above the other women on the porch.

Chorus:
Darlin' you ought to get to know my son
he's half my age and twice as fun.
Darlin' you ought to hear the boy sing
pierce your heart like steel and your ear like a ring.

Her laughter echoed through the back yard
she knew her way around that social scene
wasn't painted or pretentiously put on
but she was a woman . . . . . . if you know what I mean.

Had I been 25 years younger, maybe 20,
dare I say 15
Would have asked her for her number,
a bite to eat, a cappuccino down at Cool Beans.

Chorus:
Darlin' you ought to get to know my son
he's half my age and twice as fun.
Darlin' you ought to hear the boy sing
pierce your heart like steel and your ear like a ring.

Ancient Tune
Denes McIntosh

Wind across the water in the afternoon
remembering the summer I had with you
There's a choir in the distance
there's a fire in the dark
like a singer needs a song
I know a fire needs a spark.

If you would listen I would sing for you
There's a smile babe I could bring to you
If you would listen there's an ancient tune
I would play on the day that you come back

It seems like centuries
It's been so quiet here
Those vivid memories bring a silent tear
Tonight I just can't take, can't take the cold babe
There's nothing I wouldn't do to have you back.

Listen. . . . .
I'd build you a castle with my very own hands
I'd cut the stone babe, and dig the sand
I'd paint the sky for you and till the land
There's nothing I wouldn't do to have you back
There's nothing I wouldn't do to have you back.

Angela’s Garden

Denes McIntosh

The sun rises, the grasses dry
The glimmering dawn greets my tired eyes
The cold has left me, the dark is gone
There'll be time for sleep again when midnight comes.

Daylight lingers as the evening fades
A last impression of another day
We leave no footprint on this sacred ground
We leave no shadow, we leave no sound.

Chorus:
That's how it's always been
you make and lose friends
you take the bad with the good
beginning till the very end.
That's how it always goes
yeah, that's how it's always been
while Angela's garden grows
you do the best you can.

We walk a common road, we sing the same song
Life is so short for some, for some it's long
It's not the years we have, it's not the days
It's not how long we live, it's the way.

Chorus:
That's how it's always been
you make and lose friends
you take the bad with the good
beginning till the very end
That's how it always goes
yeah, that's how it's always been
while Angela's garden grows
you do the best you can.

Atheist Dilemma
Denes McIntosh

Fog settles in the valley
far beneath a crown of glory
mountains that can make a man sorry for his past.
Every timber tells a story
of the years gone before me
bringing hope that the morning will not come to be my last.

The peaks could reach no higher
carved by heavens best designer
I know of nothing finer than to lay beneath her breast.
Clothed as no other
in a coat of many colors
how one could fail to love her, a man could only guess.

Chorus:
It's an Atheist's dilemma
just let em try and tell ya
this beauty came to be
by some explosion beyond the moon.
Well, I suppose the Mona Lisa
was created by some freak
who had a bit too much to drink
while flinging paint around the room.

The pyramids of Egypt
just appeared as in a dream
and no one really had to cut the stones to make em.
Dylan didn't really write
"Blowin' in the Wind" one night
the song just wrote itself
while he stood naked.

The wind whispers softly
breathing life into my body
the pleasure it has brought me
can never be denied.
The sun warms my soul
like an old friend comin' home
chasin' the cold from inside me.

Chorus:

Spoken:
Sittin’ alone on the top of the mountain.
Thinkin’ about all the good things that we have.
The friends we’ve found, I’m wonderin’ why we get down,
why we lie, why we complain about our lives.
Why we can’t let trouble lie. . . . .  .like stone on the mountain. . . ..
Like stone on a mountain.

Before Her Time
Denes McIntosh

Shy as a whisper
strong as the wind
coming off the mountain
where we'd all like to live.

The breath of life had kissed her
long before her lover did
y' know I'm gonna miss her
she was born to live.

Chorus:
She was a friend of mine
she's gone before her time.

Laughter like a bubbling spring
smile like the morning
eyes like I had never seen
she came and went before me

Chorus:
She was a friend of mine
she's gone before her time.

Bridge:
And if you see her
when you reach the other side
tell her I need her
I can't seem to get it right.
And if you see her
when you reach the other side
tell her I'll leave
my yellow candle lit at night.

Beyond Our Reach
Denes McIntosh

Rugged like the banks of Coyote Creek.
Where gold lies hidden beyond our reach.
Where snakes lay coiled quick to strike
as we're blindly passing by.

Barren like the white desert sand
Where the sun beats hot across the land.
Cooling shade cannot be found
Water runs too deep underground.

Chorus:
Sometimes faith is beyond our reach,
and life gets hard to handle.
There is no guide to point the way,
there is no light, there is no candle.

Hungry like a ravaged deer
when hope has all but disappeared.
The cougar stalks the weakened doe
and takes her down by the throat.

Chorus:
Sometimes faith is beyond our reach,
and life gets hard to handle.
There is no guide to point the way,
there is no light, there is no candle.

Sometimes faith is beyond our reach,
and life gets hard to handle.
But we will somehow find our way
You’ll be my light, I’ll be your candle.

We will somehow find our way
You’ll be my light, I’ll be your candle.

Brilliant Shadows

Denes McIntosh

Brilliant shadows
leaving your impression
as they fade.
In the latest afternoon
in the disappearing shade.

Brilliant shadows
casting your reflection
on the gate.
Waiting still beneath the moon
at the closing of the day.

Chorus:
The day is done
like a passing ship
on a vast horizon
it's been fading quick.

The sun is gone
the night is here
but the dark is light
and the sky is clear.

Brilliant shadows
lingering about me
in the yard.
With a vague familiar presence
like roses in the garden.

Chorus:

Blowin' Away

Denes McIntosh

Sometimes I feel like I'm blowin' away
my foundations shakin' from the storms of the day
But I look to Jesus and I hear Him say
I have provided a way.

Chorus:
But you know you've got to come to me
I know you often want to run from me
falling short you feel unworthy
But you know I'll always love you
oh you know I'll always love you.

Sometimes I run like the wind on the sea
driven by someone I want to be
or drifting along like a bird on a breeze
forgetting the words that the Master would speak.

Chorus:

Canvass Different Colors
Denes McIntosh

Sunlight dancin' in your eyes
like the moon on the water
like the sparkle of the sidewalk
in the morning rain.
Come take your place beside me
bring the pain you've had to hide
lay it fully at my feet
where it will remain.

Chorus:
We'll paint your canvass different colors
that once were black
no need for lookin' back again
no need for doin' that.
We'll paint your canvass different colors
life has made you sad
no need for goin' there again
no need for goin' back.

And you won't have to hide anymore
or spend the night alone
waiting at your window for the dawn to break.
And you won't be ashamed anymore
or fear the telephone
or live with half a lifetime worth of heartache.

Chorus:

We'll paint your canvass different colors
paint your canvass different colors
your canvass different colors
that once were black.

Sunlight dancin' in your eyes again
like the moon on the water
lke the sparkle of the sidewalk
in the morning rain

The Captain Song
Denes McIntosh

Every morning I wake and wonder
if I can climb that hill
with little warning I step from under
my fathers perfect will.

But he keeps me with tender mercy
kind and warm and still
then gently leads me back to the safety
within his glorious will.

Chorus:
And we climb that hill together
and we fight the battle side by side
I realize I'm gonna live forever
cause I'm ridin' on the side
of the Captain of eternal life.

Every evening I'm layin’ free from
the worries of the day
I've been seein' what I've been needing
provided in a wondrous way
As I've been seekin' Him
I find that I've been reachin' Him
not by the words I pray
not by the songs I've sung, not by the deeds I've done
but only by His grace.

Chorus:

Chicken Gravy Blues

Denes McIntosh

My baby she comes home now
lookin' to cook me up somethin' fine
my baby she comes home now
to cook me up somethin' fine
she makes the best damn chicken gravy
this side of the Mason Dixon line.

She makes some right nice sweet potatoes
a mean old pot of black eyed peas
makes some right nice sweet potatoes
a mean old pot of black eyed peas
makes the best damn chicken gravy
this poor boy has ever seen.

Chorus:
Well I've tasted other cookin'
but nothin's quite the same
that pretty little woman
she's drivin' me insane
I don't know
what in the world I'm gonna do
I got them "ain't bad, I'm glad I have
Chicken Gravy Blues".

Repeat: Verse 1
Repeat: Chorus

The Cliché Song
Denes McIntosh

Chorus:
Life can be a cliché my friend
No matter how well you write it
Just a flickering flame on a candle in the wind
No matter how well you light it.

Lightening never strikes in the same place twice
The sun always sets in the west.
Two wrongs don’t make a right
So do what you think is best.

The lights are on, but nobody’s home
Got to sleep in the bed that you made
All that glitters is not gold
In your 15 minutes of fame.

Chorus:

One mans ceiling is another mans floor
A rolling stone gathers no moss
John Lennon said “make love, not war”
But I want to die with his boots on.

You were right from your side, babe,
But I was right from mine
You don’t miss your water till the well runs dry
Better read between the lines.

Chorus:

A chain’s only strong as it’s weakest link
And water always flows down hill
You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink
Break the body, but not the will.

Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades
Take one day at a time
Billy Graham told you ‘Jesus Saves’
but don’t be blinded by the light.

Chorus:

You can look but you better not touch
Cause she’s got eyes in the back of her head
She died doing what she always loved
Burning the candle at both ends

You can’t always walk on the razor’s edge
I’ve got the place if you’ve got the time
They say “Never let em see you sweat”
But a good man is hard to find

Chorus:

Lightning never strikes in the same place twice
The end never justifies the means
Y’know the customer’s always right.
And the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

It’s always darkest just before the dawn
But you’re in way over your head
Sometimes it’s not worth the paper it’s written on
Give me liberty or give me death.

Chorus:

Confession

Denes McIntosh

It's not too easy all the time
to call a friend and say
"I've been having trouble walkin' on the narrow way.
I can't always blame the Prince of the Power of the Air
sometimes I find I just don't care".

Chorus:
Praise the Lord
He can see beyond the things that be
He keeps me keepin’  on
He's ordained the victory.
He brings understanding
and I begin to see
these feelings of defeat will soon be leaving."

It's not for me an easy thing
to keep my life in line
To walk the way that Jesus walked nearly all the time.
Honesty demanding I be standing near the Lord
I often wonder what I'm standing for.

Chorus:

Relationships so often slip
from where they need to be
When all the ones I  love become the ones I want to leave.
Sometimes I want to run
from what I've come to be
back to when I used to just be me.

Chorus:

Cowboy Blessing

Denes McIntosh

May the trail not be rocky when you ride
May your spurs jingle-jangle in perfect time.
May you hook on with a good cattle drive
And work hard into the fading light.

May your saddle always fit like a glove
May you be guided by your faithful dog
Protected by the hand of God
May your woman give you love.

May you find that perfect ranch
May a thousand cattle carry your brand
May they drink from the Rio Grande
May your rope never tangle in your hands

May your herd be carefully tended
May your fences all be mended
May your whisky never be blended
May your territory be defended.

May you always be a cowboy to the bone
May your stature be chiseled in stone
May your restless nature let you roam
May your horse always get you home.

May your boots always get their kicks
May your pistol never jam in a fix
May your draw be lightening quick
May you always shoot from the hip.

May your partner never let you down
May your bedroll find warm ground
May good fortune follow you around
If you get lost may you be found.

May your jeans never be designer
May your beans be heated on an open fire
May your voice be heard in a midnight choir
May you become an old cowboy survivor.

May the stars light your way in the dark
May you speak no unkind remark
May your bite be not as bad as your bark
May your brand be like no other mark

May the band always play your song
May you dance with the girl that you brung.
May you do what’s right, not wrong
May you be strong.

May you prosper on the land where you live
With a few good next of kin
When you get hurt may you learn to forgive.
May you take disappointment on the chin

May your chaps flap free in the wind
May your laughter be quick among friends
May you see down around the next bend
May you never look back till the end.

May your horse always have enough hay
May your hat never shrink in the rain
May the sun set slowly at the end of the day
And may that Old Coyote sing at your grave.

Coyotes Lament
Denes McIntosh

Feels Like it's gonna rain.
I wonder if it's gonna rain.

Crazy Heart

Denes McIntosh

Too many drinks, too many one-night stands

Too many self-penned songs about a broken man.

Too many towns along too many roads

Too many dwindling crowds, too many midnight shows.

He was too long lonely, He was too long gone

He was too long sleepin’ where he didn’t belong

He was too long chasin’ that elusive dream

He was too long repeatin’ the same old thing.

Chorus:

He had a crazy heart, it got the best of him

He had a wounded heart, it took the rest of him

He had a crazy heart, it had a hold on him

He had a heavy heart from the outside in.

But if you’d like to know what the man was all about

He had a heart of gold from the inside out.

He was a broken man with a broken heart

He was a tired old soul slowly fallin’ apart

He was an absent father to an orphan son

He was ashamed he couldn’t finish what he’d once begun.

Chorus:

He was down in the dumps, he was down on his luck

He was ridin’ on fumes in that old pick-up truck

He was down to the wire, down to his last buck

He was down so low it left him lookin’ up.

Bridge:

And that’s right where he needed to be

Like ripe fruit ready to fall from a tree

That’s right in line with the order of things

Life can bring a wandering man to his knees.

Chorus:

The Creator

Denes McIntosh

Green hills and berries
bright skies and clouds
echoing canyons crying aloud
mountains that stretch forth
a powerful hand
faithfully guarding
the rest of the land.

Chorus:
Oh how much greater
is the creator
He's the master of all
that the mind can perceive
He's the maker of everything
we've learned to love
and the author of all
that is still yet to be.

Rivers and streams
and the beauty at sunrise
stars shining down on a clear summer night
wide open spaces
where we can run free
and the wondrous sunsets
we so often see.

Chorus:

Dance On The Water

Denes McIntosh

Chorus:

In this crazy world

got to live and dance

dance on the water

as if it were glass.

In this crazy world

got to take a chance

got to leave each day

like it may be your last.

Shout at the devil

raise your fist to the sky

lift your voice like an Eagle

on it's maiden flight.

Chorus:

Love like a hurricane

laugh like a child

live with a vengeance

and a curious smile.

Chorus:

Reach for the sun

give your neighbor a hand

teach what you know

and learn what you can.

Chorus:

Walk on the wind

in an old pair of jeans

keep your feet on the ground

whatever that means.

Chorus:

Dark Eyes

Denes McIntosh

Crowd of strangers.
Everybody seems to know my name.
Unfamiliar faces
dripping wet,  left standing in the rain.

Dark eyes
but nobody I know from around these parts.
It's time to make my way
down the road to distant places of the heart.

Too much confusion here.
Just can't think clearly anymore.
A lingering illusion
keeps the ravenous wolf from my door.

In the deepest night
I can feel your cold breath on my back
A familiar recollection
like my unrelenting fear of the pack.

Chorus:
You move me like a forbidden dance
My heart relies on circumstance
I always love what I can't have
I will not tell your secrets.
I always love what I can't have
I'll live with my regrets.

The gathering storm.
A reminder of the not too distant past.
Bewildered and forlorn
I'll let the next desire be my last.
I laugh alone,
with a chorus of voices from the grave
I dance on stone
It's best to not let pleasure in the way.

Chorus:
You move me like a forbidden dance
My heart relies on circumstance
I always love what I can't have
I will not tell your secrets.
I always love what I can't have
I'll live with my regrets.

Demon Kiss

Denes McIntosh

Chorus:
Snake eyes
and barbed wire stretched tight
give me a look at the stars tonight.
Demon kiss
no good can become of this
There’s no salvation in sight.

If I were free
you would probably find me
leaning hard against a tall pine tree.
And if I were tired
I would build a small fire
and let the night slowly come over me.

Chorus:
Snake eyes
and barbed wire stretched tight
give me a look at the stars tonight.
Demon kiss
no good can become of this.
There’s no salvation in sight.

If I could dream
I would know what it means
to float on my back down a wandering stream.
And if I could feel
something other than this steel
I believe that I could be redeemed.

Chorus:
Snake eyes
and barbed wire stretched tight
give me a look at the stars tonight.
Demon kiss
no good can become of this
There’s no salvation in sight.

If I could raise
my voice today
I’d send it out over the northern gate.
Beyond the yard
past the lingering guards
to carry my terrible sadness away.

Chorus:
Snake eyes
and barbed wire stretched tight
give me a look at the stars tonight.
Demon kiss
no good can become of this
There’s no salvation in sight.

If I could stop
this pounding clock
that echoes through my cell block
I would sing a hymn
from the silence within
and measure the time by my teardrops.

Chorus:
Snake eyes
and barbed wire stretched tight
give me a look at the stars tonight.
Demon kiss
no good can become of this
There’s no salvation in sight.

The Desert
Denes McIntosh

He was baptized by some guy
then empowered from on high
went camping for 40 days.
He was tried and tempted in every way.

The devil came and said "If you be hungry
turn these rocks into some French bread.
Christ, use your head.
Don't be hungry, have some cheese and bread.”

But Jesus said "I shall not live on bread alone,
it would not give me protein, but only fat
I need the word of God to keep me where I'm at.”

The devil took him up on high
said "How'd you like to learn to fly,
then jump off, you'll not be alone.
Angels will catch you before you hit the stones".

Well Jesus said "That's not my style
the fall looks nearly half a mile.
I'm certain you're some kind of fraud.
And the Scripture says "Don't test the Lord your God".

Well the devil showed him all the kingdoms
of the world, he said he'd bring them to Him,
and all their glory
if you'll worship me in this exclusive story.

Jesus said "Satan be gone
I can't relate to your sad song
I think you're throwin' me a curve.
I'm gonna worship God, He's the only one I'm gonna serve.”

The angels came to comfort Him, said
"Jesus tell us how you been
You look like you been through a lot.
Can we join you singin' praises to our God?"

Do Not Be Afraid
Denes McIntosh

My friend, do not be afraid of life.
Do not be afraid of the increasingly foreboding skies,
or of the rising tides.
Do not be afraid of the cold, hard, and ugly facts,
or the warm, the soft, and the beautiful lies.

Do not be afraid of what people might say about you.
Just ask if they’re better off with you, or without you?

Do not be afraid of the darkness, or of the light,
flattering opinions, or dire predictions in the night.
Do not be afraid of fiction, or of the truth.
Do not be afraid of the ignorance of youth.
Do not be afraid of the wisdom of age.
Do not be afraid of the joker or the sage.

Do not be afraid of what people might say about you,
just ask if they’re better off with you, or without you?

Do not be afraid of the well known, or of the unknown.
Do not be afraid of the well worn, or the newborn.
Do not be afraid of a different point of view.
Do not be afraid of the old, or of the new.
Do not be afraid of the apparent, or the obscure.
Do not be afraid of the sickness, or the cure.

Do not be afraid of what people might say about you,
just ask if they’re better off with you or without you?

Do not be afraid of the sacred, or profane.
Do not be afraid of the blessing or the flame,
cause fear, it will only kill you.
Fear, it will only kill you.
Do not be afraid of the future, or of the past.
Do not be afraid of being first, or being last.
Do not be afraid of being afraid, my friend.
Do not be afraid, do not be afraid of death.
Do not be afraid, do not be afraid, my friend.

Dogs on the Run

Denes McIntosh

Used to be you and me
a little farm on the coast
I believe we were free
free-er then than most.

Dogs on the run
ducks in the pond
a pony and a goat.
Flower garden in the yard
and you in your petty coat.

Chorus:

Early mornin' in the fog
and watchin' it all roll away
come and gone like a lovers song
lookin' back on yesterday.

Used to be twenty three
I used to be thirty one
I can't believe the change I've seen
good god, where has the time gone?

Repeat Chorus:
Repeat Verse 1:
Repeat Chorus:

Dorothy's Comin' Back

Denes McIntosh

Night owls and street freaks
rush hour cowboys on the bus
All the downtown ladies, they line the roadways
stretching miles like locusts in the sun
takin' the breath from my lungs
love comes like a bandit in the night.

Doubt, like dust, covers my soul
guard dogs keep the curious away
they come to feast on fools, wearing silk with satin shoes
there's just too many minutes in the day
love holds you like a promise
then pushes you away again like fire.

Chorus:
Standing naked on one leg
doin' my best to dance
Dorothy's comin' back to Kansas

The winter of my discontent
darkness falls just like a silhouette
love plays you like a trumpet then beats you like a drum
it could be such an ordinary death.
All the solitary fires
are burning low and dying out alone.

Chorus:
Standing naked on one leg
doin' my best to dance
Dorothy's comin' back to Kansas

You did not kill me
you didn't have the strength
you did not kill me
my life just wasn't yours to take
Now you'll be the last one left in line
before the window closes for the night.

Chorus:
Standing naked on one leg
doin' my best to dance
Dorothy's comin' back to Kansas.

Down the Road

Denes McIntosh

I fell asleep while it was warm
and was awakened by the cold.
The earth was covered over
by a blanket of snow.
The sun disappeared,
as if fallen from the sky
It took the hope of my salvation
in the blink of an eye.

I fell asleep while it was calm
and was awakened by the war
The night took my courage
as I stumbled through the door.
With nowhere to go
and no safe place left to hide
I listened once again
to that quiet voice inside.

The sky will be clear again.
The clouds will be gone.
The noise will be muted,
all the fighting will stop.

Further on, further on
further on down the road.
I know it’s always darkest
just before the dawn.

The sky will be clear again
The clouds will be gone
It’s always darkest
just before the dawn.

Dwight Jordan

Denes McIntosh

Dwight Jordan, don't look back
you joined the army to avoid the draft.
Dwight Jordan, you're still black
24 years could not change that.
Dwight Jordan, it's a fact
you were running from an unfortunate past.
Dwight Jordan, you're no match
for a system that's designed to break your back.

Chorus:
You were such a young man
when you went in.
They made you hard as sin.
You were such a pleasure to be with.
You can be that man again.
Dwight Jordan (repeat).

Dwight Jordan, how'd you get so tough?
Was your gentle nature somehow just
not good enough?
Dwight Jordan, don't give up
you just have to drink from a different cup.
Dwight Jordan, take some time
to see how you've been walkin' such a fine line.
Dwight Jordan, make up your mind.
You got one foot on a ladder you can't climb.

Chorus:

Dwight Jordan, it's quite clear
you been sleeping' with the whores New York
to Tangiers.
Dwight Jordan, I fear
it's made you cold and old before your years.
Dwight Jordan, don't trade your pride
for the pleasure that you find
in those forbidden thighs.
Dwight Jordan, it's a heavy price
that you pay when you lay upon
that bed of ice.

Chorus:

Dylan's Song

Denes McIntosh

Watchin' the boy become a man
takin' his place in the band
makin' a change I understand
is destined to last.

Watchin' you find your own way
like your brother found his
no longer a kid,
you're much stronger than that.

Chorus:
Like jazz in funky time, y' know
with symbols crashin' at the most
dramatic parts.
Chasin' abstract rhythms home
puttin' every note in time
with your own beating heart.

Standin' tall as you've ever been
takin' all the knocks life can give
landin' on your feet once again
it's what I've come to expect.

Makin' some damn good friends
shakin' your fist in the wind
puttin' those sticks to the skins
who knows what's comin' next.

Repeat Chorus:

The Early a.m.

Denes McIntosh

In the Early a.m.
I am not yet alive to you.
Not yet awake to your presence
Not yet in time with your breath.

In the early a.m.
I am not yet fully conscious.
Not yet home from the river
Not yet back from the dead.

But in the late afternoon
In the late afternoon
I am alive again to you,
I am not tired.

In the late afternoon,
In the late afternoon
my eyes behold your beauty
by the fire.

Early Sunday Morning

Denes McIntosh

Walkin' on a lonely beach early Sunday morning
eyes turned down towards my feet
I've just come through a storm
and I've been hoping for a sign from heaven
lookin' for the Lord to show me
He could feel the things that I've been feeling.

Burdened by the world around me, darker every day
hurting for the people who've been hurt along the way.
I've been angry with the devil
and the evil that he's done
but feelin' sorry for the people
who been hidin' from the son.

Lookin' down at the ground
I find a pebble lying in the sand
I'm gently reachin’ out my hand.
I begin to see that pebble is a sign for me from heaven
showin' me my Father understands.

It's rounded out and wearin' smooth
from teardrops as the Lords been moved
to weepin' over the lonely state of man.

Repeat 1st Verse:

Easy Street

Denes McIntosh

There's a woman out there weepin'
there's a man who ain't been home
there's a kid who runs away without a warning'.
There's a drifter in a doorway sleepin'
there's a child left all alone
there's a stranger on the back row Sunday morning'.

Chorus:
They're somebody
same as you and me
and everyone is lookin' to be loved
they've got worth
beyond what we can see
living self indulgently on Easy Street.

There's a junkie in the street
the less fortunate you meet
there's a hooker scraping' dollars off the bottom.
There's a prisoner counting' time
there's the sad and lonely lives
of the many who have all but been forgotten.

Chorus:

Spoken:
Some say the hardship has been over for awhile, that everyone's O.K. now just cause they are.
But recently I heard the screaming, the weeping.  I've seen the bleeding hearts and tormented minds
of those that justice shit on.
They're left to reconstruct their trampled lives alone, to mend their broken hopes and battered dreams
without the help of those who at one time seemed to care,
somewhere back before the sky fell in.
But where are all the friends of the unfortunate now?  Have they run to houses on secluded hillsides
to hide from the discomfort of their past participation in the pain?
Well, the cause goes on without them, but it's crippled
like the victims it embraces.
How easy we forget.

Elaine's Song

Denes McIntosh

Come away my beloved
seek after me
I know your desires child
I know your needs
I will never fail thee
I'll surely never leave
Unknown riches await thy discovery.

Chorus:
My hand shall be upon you
my gentle arms have spawned you
so I say to thee as I have said before
"Lie not dormant
be not like the rocks
lying near the pond
gathering the moss
follow close behind me
no matter what the cost
I will be your shepherd
be my flock".

Lo, I am with thee
child I will help thee
Be not discouraged
nor weary of heart.
My love shall be thy constant portion
my joy a priceless fortune
welling up within your faithful heart.

Chorus:

40 Days Without Water

Denes McIntosh

Road song
like the wind through my soul
I'm at the mercy of the Muse.

How long
can I continue to go on
without water, without you?

40 days can be a lifetime
40 nights without sleep
like Jesus in the desert
Like Ghandi in the street.
Dylan Thomas at the bar
Like Mohammed in the ring
Like Geronimo on a mission
Like Martin Luther King.
40 days without water
40 nights without sleep
I'd give 40 pounds of flesh
just to hear your heart beat.

Chorus:
40 days without water
40 days without water
40 days without water
40 nights without sleep.

40 days without water
40 nights without sleep
I'd give 40 pounds of flesh
just to hear your heart beat.

Road song
like the wind through my soul
I'm at the mercy of the Muse.

How long
can I continue to go on
without water, without you?

Fallen Angel
Denes McIntosh

Street lights are on, but the ladies door is dark
It should come to you now as no surprise.
The final moment of your life, throw your faith to the sharks
Check your messages again before you die.

She’s protected from the weather by her long blond hair
Love can be a very dangerous game.
It comes on quickly, and leaves without a care,
You make the rules up along the way.

Chorus:
There’s no one left to blame but the blameless.
Everybody’s got to take their turn.
You can buy salvation from a fallen angel
But you’ll have to learn to live with the burn.

She was really nothing more than a bad acquaintance
You never should have asked her for a dance.
No one really changes, they just tend to get undressed
And let the darkness penetrate the cracks

You were born in the palace, but you can’t live with the queen.
Paying homage has been such a waste of time
Walk on the water now, or sink into the sea,
But don’t bleed to death again before you die

Chorus:
There’s no one left to blame but the blameless.
Everybody’s got to take their turn.
You can buy salvation from a fallen angel
But you’ll have to learn to live with the burn.

What you think of me is none of my business
What I think of you is really none of yours.
Look at the circle surrounding the moon
I’m running free again with all the wild horses.

The First Time
Denes McIntosh

I watched your shadow
touching itself
in the dim light,
it was the first time
I remember wanting you.
It was the last time
I'd be without you.

Your hands glided slowly
over your dark skin
on the wall that was a canvass
for your silhouette.
Your cigarette burned slowly
hanging lightly from your lips
dropping ashes on your breast
giving shape to your breath.

It was the first time
I remember wanting you.

You touched my face
in the soft light,
you touched yourself with hands
that I wished were mine.
You breathed a sigh, a song of life
I caught my breath
and harmonized.

It was the first time
I remember wanting you.
It was the first time
I remember wanting you.

Forgiven
Denes McIntosh

We have walked down the broad side of that wandering road.

We have fought on the wrong side in the battle for our soul

We have run ourselves ragged, broken down before we’re old.

Forsaken a warm heart for the bitter cold.

We have plundered every season under a midnight sun.

We have shunned the voice of reason for the devils silver tongue

We have robbed the newborn dreamer at the barrel of a gun.

Forsaken the warm heart of our only son.

Chorus:

But we have been forgiven.

Yes, we have been forgiven.

We have been the good Samaritan and the evil twin

We’ve indulged in guilty pleasures that are better left unsaid

We have clothed ourselves in righteousness like the Pharisee did

Forsaken that warm heart till the bitter end.

Chorus:

But we have been forgiven.

Yes, we have been forgiven

We have paid undue homage to the joker and the fool

We have made our bed of sorrow with our neighbor’s tools

We have broken every promise, and have broken all the rules

Forsaken a warm heart for a bag of jewels.

Chorus:

But we have been forgiven.

Yes, we have been forgiven

We have laid across the railroad tracks of an outbound train

We have pumped the new delusion through our jugular vein

We have fallen hard for promises that came wrapped in gold again

Forsaken a warm heart for the profane.

Chorus:

But we have been forgiven.

Yes, we have been forgiven

Friends

Denes McIntosh

Well I only wanted to make you smile
walk with you a little while
and hold your hand till you could walk alone.
I had no idea I'd fall in love with you
I had no intention to
How was I to know I'd end up walkin' you home?

Chorus:
Through your tears I saw those shining eyes
dancing naked in the sun
through your pain I faced my own barren life
through your broken heart I learned to love.

Well I only wanted to make you laugh
draw a champagne bubble bath
and take a moment to pull you in out of the cold.
I had no idea it would all come back
to greet me like a welcome mat
and to give me back my long abandoned soul.

Chorus:

Bridge:
You read me from cover to cover
and loved me in spite of myself
you've been my friend and my lover
and honey you're everything else,
that I need.  That I'll ever need.
You'll see.

Well I only wanted to be your friend
to help you to feel good again
to get your eyes off the dark
and back on the dawn.
I had no idea you'd fall in love with me
I guess that's how it had to be
let's do our best to let the past be gone.

Chorus:

The Garden

Denes McIntosh

We were born in the Garden
weeping willows all hangin' down
Sunshine warm on our bodies
walking barefoot on the ground.

We were alive in the Garden
like a lazy Autumn afternoon
Our laughter echoed through the canyon,
sweet gardenia's were all in bloom.

We made love in the Garden
like in some faint Celestial dream
Beneath the silent mountain
we soaked our bodies in the bubbling stream.

GOTTA GET BACK

There was music in the Garden
nature sang a mystic tune
It was quiet and assuring
no one ever spoke too soon.

GOTTA GET BACK.

We were a family in the Garden
we had integrity, our word was true.
There was kindness and compassion
you cared for me and I cared for you.

GOTTA GET BACK.

Got to get back to the Garden
got to learn to live again.
Got to get back to the Garden
got to learn to live and love again.

GOTTA GET BACK.

Get Outta Dodge
Denes McIntosh

Born down in the valley, and I watched it grow
from a one horse town north of Mexico.
With my head held high, and my gun hangin’ low
the girls were fast, but the livin’ was slow.

Used to ride my pony down to the creek
I’d water him there, and get myself a drink.
Pa used to tell me “boy, say what you think,
got to write your own story with indelible ink.”

Chorus:
But I got to get outta Dodge
cause Dodge just ain’t what it used to be.
Gotta get the hell outta Dodge
before Dodge knocks the hell outta me.

I would do my business with neighbors and friends
A mans word was good with just a shake of the hand.
Helpin’ each other was the law of the land
and work made a boy a responsible man.

We’d sit on the porch at the end of the day
and tell stories that changed like the weather in May.
Puttin’ a bottle of whisky away
till nobody had nothin’ further to say.

Chorus:
But I got to get outta Dodge
cause Dodge just ain’t what it used to be.
Gotta get the hell outta Dodge
before Dodge knocks the hell outta me.

The town kept growin’ like a summertime weed
people driving crazy like a wild stampede.
The handshake turned into a legal decree
and more often than not folks would disagree.

I’m gonna move my family on out of this place
get away from the hustle of the rat race.
Gonna build my ranch in some wide open space
where a man can breathe and his cattle can graze.

Chorus:
Got to get outta Dodge
cause Dodge just ain’t what it used to be.
Gotta get the hell outta Dodge
before Dodge knocks the hell outta me.

Give em' a Drum

 Denes McIntosh

Mickey walked the halls all night
up and down that long aisle like
a scene from one of those old Jack Nickelson movies

Billy slumped down low in his chair
nursing his depression like you'd wear
your finest suit for everybody to see

Chorus:
We drive em there in our expensive cars
drop em off with a ticket to mars
give em a drum and a wooden spoon to bang with.
They couldn't cope with societies stuff
they lose their homes and we lend em a buck
it's a wonder that we don't just give em a rope to hang with.

Benny sits and swears at the wall
angry at the way the dice fall
give the man another med, it'll settle him down.

Lucy likes to stay up all night
sittin' on her bed with no light
talkin' to herself without makin' a sound.

Chorus:

Martin says "it just doesn't matter"
he tried to climb the corporate ladder
gave the company his soul and they ate him alive.

Linda watches television all day
imagining the parts they all play
waiting for her life to hurry up and arrive.

Chorus:

God Forsaken Land
Denes McIntosh

Run baby run
dogs are nipping at your feet
the thunders rolling like a train
it'll knock you to your knees.

Run baby run
the devils on the loose
he's come to take you down tonight
you got to pay your dues.

Run baby run
the beast is in the field
he's tearin' up the heartland
gonna take what he can steal.

Chorus:
No warning sign’s been posted
just an old and weathered fence
along a solitary road
running off into the past.
There are many who have traveled
this god forsaken land
leaving dreams to die along the way
they couldn't carry all of them.

This is no mans land
the abandoned highway
you can find it on the map
but it don't run my way.
This is no mans land
the place of my birth
got to carry your own water
or you'll die out here of thirst.

Run baby run
don't be stopping here alone
the air is hotter than a pistol
and it's dryer than a bone.

Run baby run
don't come back this way again
put your eyes on the horizon
put your mind on what's ahead.

Chorus:

God Is Love

Denes McIntosh

We say we know God
We read His Word, we hear His voice,
and serve Him like we know we should.
We say we know God
We keep Him close
We say we know His way
and what He wants.

Chorus:
We say we know His way
and what He wants.
But I think we’ve forgotten
God is Love.
Yes, I think we’ve forgotten
God is Love.

We say we know God
We serve Him in the Temple,
in the Church, and in the Mosque.
We give our time, we pay our tithe, confess our sins
and say our prayers
just like He wants.

Chorus:
We say our prayers
Just like He wants.
But I think we’ve forgotten
God is Love.
Yes, I think we’ve forgotten
God is Love.

We say we know God
We know His politics, social positions,
and what He’d do in any given situation.
We say we know God,
We know His mind, His will,
and the side that He’d be on.

Chorus:
We say we know God
and the side that He’d be on.
But I think we’ve forgotten
God is Love.
Yes, I think we’ve forgotten
God is Love.

Goin’ Up The Mountain

Denes McIntosh

Goin’ up the mountain

gonna build myself a house

Goin’ up the mountain

get outta this lousy town.

Goin’ up to the top of the world

gonna plant myself there

Let my song massage the wind

gonna breathe some fresh air.

Chorus:

Gonna take my woman

Gonna take my dog

Gonna take my pony

Gonna bring em all along

Gonna take my rifle

I’ll take my fishin’ pole

Gonna take my knife and maybe I’ll find

a nice fishin’ hole.

Goin’ up to where the earth meets the sky

where the black bears feed on the berries

Goin’ up that mountain side

with just the stuff my old truck can carry.

Chorus:

Gonna take my woman

Gonna take my dog

Gonna take my pony

Gonna bring em all along

Gonna take my rifle

I’ll take my fishin’ pole

Gonna take my knife and maybe I’ll find

a nice fishin’ hole.

Hand To The Plow
Denes McIntosh

A clanking across the vineyard like pipe against rock
Wind on the surface of an irrigation pond
Canadian geese engaged in lively foreign talk
Acorns poppin’ under foot where I walk

The sky rumblin’ by like yesterdays news
The last swig left on my best bottle of booze
The sound of a lie that just never rang true.
The final refrain of the Mule Skinner Blues

Chorus:
I can hear every one of these familiar sounds
I don’t need to put my one good ear to the ground
I just put my hand to the proverbial plow
Put my hand to the plow and keep pushin’.

The sound of somebody breaking a bond
Choosin’ up sides for who’s right and who’s wrong
The echo of lyrics from a faraway song
Sound track of a lifetime three-quarters gone.

Chorus:

Laughter as phony as a three dollar bill
A young woman swallowing a bottle of pills
A forlorn lover tumblin’ down another hill
Life will first mock, and then kill you.

Chorus:

Bridge:

Put my hand, put my hand, put my hand to the plow.
Put my hand, put my hand to the plow.
I won’t be here long, but I’m here right now
And I’ll hang on till the day I go down.

Chorus:

Harvester

Denes McIntosh / Mike Kelley

You’ve been living on you own for oh so many years
Yet you haven’t found a place that you call home.
Your thoughts are spent on memories of laughter and of tears
Keeping from the fact that you’re alone.

As springtime turns to summer and the sky begins to rain
You see the clouds a rollin’ overhead
The Harvester is coming soon to gather up His grain
To separate the living from the dead.

Chorus:
He came to me when I was hungry
He came to me when I was cold
He came to me when I was dying
The Son of Man He came and made me whole.

You say that time has taken all the friends that once were yours
Reflections tell your mind you’re getting old
But your feelings are deceiving and you know there’s something more
The sunshine on your life is growing cold.

Chorus:

He’ll come to you if you are hungry
He’ll come to you if you are cold
He’ll come to you if you are dying
The Son of Man He’ll come and make you whole.

Heart Beating Harder

Denes McIntosh

Waiting, while the minutes tick away
breathing in time with the clock.
Wanting, for the space to be gone
between the leaving
and your homecoming key in the lock.

Cause when we’re apart

The rain stops falling
the thunder stops clapping
the lightning stops striking
the flags stop flapping.

The voices stop talking
the drunks stop drinking
the birds stop singing
the mind stops thinking.

The horns stop honking
the earth stops spinning
the dogs stop barking
the face stop grinning.

And my heart keeps beating louder
like a mountain on fire,
my pulse is running hard like a storm.
My breath is getting shorter
like a late Autumn day
but the thought of you is keeping me warm.

He Became
Denes McIntosh

A certain contradiction
independent parts
a pretty healthy ego
with a soft and gentle heart.

Chorus:
Like a lion in a rage
rattling the cage to make his way
to freedom.
Like a child in the arms
of a mother he belongs
to those who need him.

Soul of an artist
body of a man
strong willed, kind hearted
doing what he can.

Chorus:
Like a lion in a rage
rattling the cage to make his way
to freedom.
Like a lover in the arms
of a woman he belongs to those who need him.

He could have been a dancer in the Bolshevik ballet
he could have been an actor on Broadway
He could have pointed fingers, could've found someone to blame
but he became a singer on his own stage.

Your window is open, step out from your pain
your heart is an ocean, you can walk between the rain
bury all my promises alongside Gideons Bones
I'll be right there behind you
while you're standin' on your own.

I'm only human. . . . . but I'll be there for you.

He Came to Me
Denes McIntosh

I've been thinkin' bout the Lord
the pain He often knew.
I've been thinkin' bout the Lord
the suffering He went through

Chorus:
He came to me when I was hungry
He came to me when I was cold
He came to me when I was broken
The son of God He came to make me whole.

I've been thinkin' bout the Lord
the places He was found
And I can see Him in the Garden
dripping blood upon the ground.

Chorus:

I can see Him back a bleeding
beat till nearly dead
and I can see Him softly weeping
crown of thorns upon His head.

Chorus:

Now I can see Him deathly hangin'
dark against the sky
and I can see Him barely breathin'
spear thrust in His side.

Chorus:

Now I can see Him clothed in Glory
just like the story said
And I can feel Him living for me
risen from the dead.

Chorus:

Here I Am Again
Denes McIntosh

This highway I've been travelin'
it often gets me down
I found that it gets hard.
And I spend time unravelin'
the pain that has me bound
it's tearin' me apart.

Chorus:
Lord, here I am again
longing to be your closest friend
I want to sit with you and talk
until dawn.
Here I am again
and you know everywhere I've been,
y' know I need you . . . to carry on.

Seems I'm always lookin' for
something I'll never find,
It's just a state of mind.
And I pour out my life
like hangin' laundry on the line
in hopes the sun may shine.

Chorus:

He Speaks To Me
Denes McIntosh

I wrote my own story, took a stand for what's right
Raised a flag every morning in the early light.
Stood naked in the shade, tossed my fate to the wind
Fell asleep in the bed I made, embraced the blessed, cursed the sin.

I wandered through the desert, stumbled lost across the sand
in search of Holy Water in a dry and barren land.
I made my way alone through the darkest of night
on a wing and a prayer by His guiding light.

Chorus:
There is a God somewhere
and He speaks to me with a still small voice like a mountain stream.
There is a God, I'm sure,
sometimes He speaks to me with a mighty roar, like in an angry dream.
I can hear the distant thunder and the rumble of the earth beneath my feet.
But I don't fear Him.
and I can hear Him talk to me.

I raised my fist to the sky, caught lightening in my hand
Turned my back on the devil, he was not my friend.
I bowed before your altar, a broken man
Forgiven for what I haven't been, and loved for what I am

I don't fear Him.
And I can hear Him talk to me.

He's the One
Denes McIntosh

Look to the one
who changed the course of all mankind.
Look to the one
who gives the sight back to the blind.
Look to the one
who raises the dying from their bed.
Look to that one to come again.

Look to the one
who changes the water into wine.
Look to the one
who claims to be the bread of life.
Look to the one
who gives us springs of living water.
Look to the one
we've got to know to reach the Father.

Chorus:
He's the one who knew me
when I needed to be known
He's the one who showed me
what I needed to be shown
He's the one who came and gave
His life to save my own
He's the sun shining on my road.

Look to the one
who came to die for me and you.
He said "Father forgive them
for they know not what they do".
He left His throne of glory
gave us all that He could give.
He suffered on a cross
that we might live.

Chorus:

He Treats Me Good
Denes McIntosh

Lord I'm so grateful for the freedom that you give
I just want to thank you for the life you let me live
if I could only find a way to say "hey you treat me much too good"
I know you'd turn around, look down and say
"child I treat you like a father should".
But still I feel that you treat me much too good.

I often wonder bout the way I'm treating you
I fail so often in the things I say and do
if I could only return to you Lord, half the love you've given me
I know that I'd be able to pour forth
enough to fill the deepest sea
And that would only be half as much as you've given me.

It's such a blessing Lord to have you on my side.
There is no other one in whom I would abide.
You loved me right on out of my sin
and now you bless me every day
you showed me where I had to begin
and now you lead me on my way
and there wasn't any price I had to pay.

No there wasn't any price I had to pay
I thank you Lord for given me a brand new day
and I thank you Lord for leadin' me on my way.

Hole in the Sun
Denes McIntosh

You could burn a hole in the sun with your smile
melt the icecaps of the earth with your style
take the finger from the trigger of a man who wants to die
you could make a lame man walk a hundred miles.

You could take the ugly from the world with your face
make the kitchen sweep itself with your grace
make a phone line never busy, a cheap wine have good taste
make a man who's in a hurry want to wait.

You could tame a raging storm with your charm
make an angry man melt in your arms
give a poor man promise, make a rich man buy the farm
make him want to buy the horses and the barn.

Chorus:
You’re the sun to warm my soul, you’re the moon at night.
You’re the one to warn me when I fall too  far from the light
You’re my wide open space babe, you set the fence on fire.
You put the beat back in my heart and the heat in my desire.

Alternate Chorus:
You're everything I've wanted, everything I need
you are my promise and you are my dream.
I'll learn to give you honesty like you have given me.
I will love you like the man that you have wanted me to be.

You could make a blind man see with your eyes
make a strong man weak with desire
take the dark out of the night, make every wrong seem right
you could make a cold man warm with your fire.

You could make a boy out of a man by your choice
make a sad man sing and rejoice
make a steady man stumble, give a clumsy man poise
you could sway the vote with your voice.

Chorus:

How Many Tears?
Denes McIntosh

I've made mistakes
some I knew that I was makin'
some just turned out that way.
That doesn't mean I didn't love you
it just means that I was weak.

Chorus:
And how many tears
will you require of me?

Fifteen long years
have left my soul half abandoned
and my heart filled with fear.
I have been alone of late
longing for the pleasure
of your company.

Chorus:
And how many tears
will you require of me?
How many tears?
How many tears?
How many tears will you require of me?

I cannot see.
My eyes have grown accustomed
to a fading memory.
The future waits impatient
somewhere just beyond my reach.

Chorus:

Hunger
Denes McIntosh

She's hungry, and she's homeless
she walks a lonely road
a mother cryin' "won't you take my child to your home
and give her shelter".

Chorus:
"Give her something for her hunger
something for her soul
something for her sadness
and something for the cold
that's been growin' in her heart
tearin' her apart
and keepin' her from ever bein' whole".

The hard side of the tracks
in every hometown USA
growing weary of the struggle
gettin' tougher every day
to keep from letting go.

Chorus:

Inner city families
no earth between their toes
momma's runnin' down a hustle
you know how the story goes
it's not a pretty one.

Chorus:

Suburban middle class
has all the new computer toys
but the bills are overdue
and daddy's drinkin' with the boys
till early mornin'.

Chorus:

Hollywood mentality
borders on insanity
pleasure seeking fantasy
a crippling disease
you know it's tragic.

Chorus:

I Ain't Him

Denes McIntosh

Everybody wants me to be their Jesus
but I ain't Him,
never have been.

Everybody broken in a million pieces
expecting me to fix them
and be their friend.

I ask ‘em how they're doin'
they tell me how they've been
The same familiar story
then they tell me once again.

Everybody wants me to be their Jesus
but I can't free them,
nobody can.

Everybody livin’ with the same diseases
This and that disorder
Feet stuck in the sand.

Look what you've been doin'
it ain't been workin' yet.
Do something different, have some courage
make a promise, take a stand.

Everybody wants me to be their Jesus
But I can’t save them
It’s outta my hands.

I Am Just A Man
Denes McIntosh

If I were a Mountain
would you explore my weathered flesh.
Would you find a cooling shade
beneath my breast?

And if I were a Rock
would you rest your weary feet
and let my strength sustain you
when you ‘re feeling weak?

Chorus:
I am just a man doin’ the very best I can,
the very best, but sometimes that’s not good enough
.I’m givin’ what I have, makin’ a livin’ with my own hands,
without much rest.
It gets tough.

If I were a Stream
would you follow me through the hills
or lay yourself beside me.
Would you drink your fill?

If I were the Sky
would you lay up in my arms
get lost among the clouds with me
and catch a shooting star?

Chorus:
I am just a man doin’ the very best I can,
the very best, but sometimes that’s not good enough.
I’m givin’ what I have, makin’ a livin’ with my own hands,
without much rest.
It gets tough.

I Can See You

Denes McIntosh

You gave me sight
now I'm no longer blind
you gave your life
now I can give you mine.

Chorus:
I can see you
I can see you
I can see you
in the morning.

I can see you
I can see you
I can see you
my Lord and

I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you.

You gave me hope
and paved for me a road
I no longer have to cope
with my heavy load.

Chorus:
I can see you etc. . . . . .
. . . . . . . .you know I do.

But I've failed you so often
denied you so many times
I nailed you on Golgatha
and now I open my eyes to find

Chorus:
I can see you . . . . . .

I Find My Way

Denes McIntosh

In the deepest moment of the darkest night
I find my way without a light.
I find my way without a map
Without a guide I find my own way back.

I look beyond the crumbled walls
The shattered dreams of nightfall.
Those shattered dreams have breathed their last
Without a guide I find my own way back.

Chorus:
The road's been long
and much too dark for anyone to have to walk alone.
Well I've been tired babe, and I've been broke
but I keep pushing on
I keep pushing on
and I've been stronger than you'll ever really know.

I feel a breath upon my brow
I see a fire before me now.
The sky has opened on my path
Without a guide I find my own way back.

Chorus:
The road's been long
and much too dark for anyone to have to walk alone.
Well I've been tired babe, and I've been broke
but I keep pushing on
I keep pushing on
and I've been stronger than you'll ever really know.

I know You Lord

Denes McIntosh

Jesus, you are my freedom
Jesus, you are my strength
you're with me whenever I need you
you stand by me to any length.

Well I know you're a man who understands where I've been
you knew me at the cross where you bore my every sin
you've prepared a place of rest for me and long to let me in
I believe in you, and I've been born again.

God, you are my Father
Father, I am your child
You're never too busy to bother
with the little needs that don't even seem worthwhile.

Well I know that you've been hurt a thousand times in every day
And I know you've been forgotten by the people that you made
But there are still a few who love you and who long to hear you say
you'll give us time to show another man the way.

Spirit, flow right on through me
Spirit, you are my guide
you comfort and you renew me
you gently direct my life.

Well I know of the wonders that you wish to be revealed
and the souls you seek to reach, and the hearts you long to heal
And the aching, empty, lonely lives with which you wish to deal
Oh holy Spirit, lead me where you will
My Lord Jesus, I am yours to fill
Heavenly Father, use me as you will.

I Miss You When You're Gone

Denes McIntosh

On a quiet morning in the early spring
you sat before your window in the soft light
Sipping green tea and gathering your thoughts
It would be a cold day, it was a long night.

You watched me standing in the frozen yard
I watched the shadows struggling to leave
The sun was creeping slowly through the garden gate
while your eyes were warming me.

Chorus:
I remember when we met
It felt alot like that
I watched you sitting on an old chase lounge
beneath your garden hat.
I remember how I felt
like waking from a nap
I watched the sunlight warm your face
while you were watching back.

She beckoned me to come back inside
Coffee was brewing in an old copper pot
She said "I know you were only in the garden babe,
but I miss you when you're gone".

Chours:
I remember when we met
It felt alot like that.
I watched you sitting on an old chase lounge
beneath your garden hat.
I remember how I felt
like waking from a nap
I watched the sunlight warm your face
while you were watching back.

I Need You

Denes McIntosh

I need you
like a flower needs the rain.
I need you
like a child needs a name.
I see you
as a bright and sunny day
in the springtime of my life.

I need you
like an ocean needs a shore.
I need you
like heaven needs a door.
I see you
like I've not seen you before.
You've opened up my eyes.

Chorus:
And I feel like I can  fly
to the top of the world
ridin' on a breeze quietly blowin'.
I feel like I could fly
to the top of the world.
It's good to know I know where
I'm goin'.

I need you
like an evening needs a day.
I need you
in a very special way.
I see you
as a bright and sunny day.
You're the springtime of my life.

I Thought I Heard Them Singing

Denes McIntosh

Sittin' alone in my big old home
thinkin' bout my kids
the way we laughed, the way we felt
and the things we did.
I thought I heard them singing
like the Grateful Dead
a familiar song, I had to sing along,
this is what they said.

Chorus:

"Daddy, make me a special stick
just like you used to do
take out your big buck knife
and carve it true
with a pointed end, some leather
and a feather too.
Daddy, that’s how we'll remember you".

I started to dance round the room
I had to raise my hands
I'm a fortunate man to have the memories
that I have.
It ain't all in the past, it's so close that I
can touch it still
like a grain of sand in a weathered hand,
call it what you will.

Chorus:

I Want To Know You
Denes McIntosh

Chorus:
I want to know you like your daddy did
as a young girl when you’d run to him.
I want to love you like your mama would
She’d do anything to make you feel good.

I see your burning heart
A kind of silent prayer
I see the love you have for me
It’s always been there.

I see your kind eyes
when every day is done
I see your quiet smile
in every rising of the sun.

Chorus:
I want to know you like your daddy did
as a young girl when you’d run to him.
I want to love you like your mama would
She’d do anything to make you feel good.

I see your beauty
in every face you make
I see your tenderness
in every breath you take.

I see your passion
in every firm resolve
I see your faithfulness,
tearing down every wall.

Chorus:
I want to know you like your daddy did
as a young girl when you’d run to him.
I want to love you like your mama would
She’d do anything to make you feel good.

I Will Sing

Denes McIntosh

I will sing of the Lord
like I've never sang before
He forgave me, my God He saved me.

He's prepared a place for me
and someday I'm gonna be
with Him in Glory, He's made provision for me.

Chorus:
Hallelujah (repeat 6 times)

And I'll see Him face to face
He saved me by His grace
because He loved me, He died in my place.

Chorus:

I'll be Safe

Denes McIntosh

Let it rain on me
let the north wind howl
let the lightning scream
let the thunder growl

Let the river rage
let the devil call
let the valley quake
let the mountain fall.

Chorus:
I’ll be OK.  I’ll be safe
There’s a place where it cannot harm me.
In the light of day babe, I turn away
from the face of this ancient darkness.

Let the rumors fly
let the anger burn
let the subtle lies
take a vicious turn

Let the darkness come
let the music fade
let the heartless ones
lead the death parade.

Chorus:
I'll be O.K.  I'll be safe
There's a place where it cannot touch me
I'll be O.K. babe, I'll be safe
just in knowing you have loved me.

Alternate Chorus:
I’ll be OK.  I’ll be safe
There’s a place where it cannot harm me.
In the light of day babe, I turn away
from the face of this ancient darkness.

I'll Give Him My Life

Denes McIntosh

I've got a debt I can never repay
Jesus he carried all my sins away
I know He won't come collecting today
He says it's been covered by His saving grace.

Chorus:
I'll give Him my life
I'll make Him my Lord
I'll give Him my life
that's payment I can afford.

I've got a Lord who holds all things in line
I found sweet salvation in the nick of time
Jesus don't want to leave no one behind
He gave me His life so I'm givin' Him mine.

Chorus:

I've got a friend who could never betray
the trust that I place in his hands every day
He knows me like nobody's known me this way
there's only one thing I can think of to say.

Chorus:

If I Could Have My Way

Denes McIntosh

If I could have my way
the sun would linger through the night.
Your load would always be much lighter than mine
and every wrong would be right.

If I could have my way
there'd be no worry or strife.
Every word would be spoken with kindness
with little reason to fight.

Chorus:
I will love you all day long
and hope to melt the ancient ice
I will sing you're favorite song
And I will love you every day of my life.

If I could have my way
I'd put a smile on your face.
Wake each morning with a glass of champagne
spend another day in your grace.

If I could have my way
we'd work the garden in the shade.
Let the world fix itself for a change
take a nap in the heat of the day.

Chorus:
I will love you all day long
and hope to melt the ancient ice
I will sing you're favorite song
And I will love you every day of my life.

Bridge:
The storms would die and the dead would live.
The forlorn would wipe their eyes again.
The rain would wash our lingering sin
and you would always be my friend.

Chorus:
I will love you all day long
and hope to melt the ancient ice
I will sing you're favorite song
And I will love you every day of my life.

In the Company of my King

Denes McIntosh

I've been called a poet
and I've been called a priest
Sung my songs for everyone
I spoke when I should speak
I led a few towards freedom
and I touched those I could reach
and when my life is over
I'll be standin' with my king.

Chorus:
I'm thinkin'
will I have known Him
like He wanted it to be?
Will I have loved Him
half as much as He loved me?
Will I have taken time
to spend upon my knees
in the company of my king?

Repeat.

Spoken:
I know many of you have done a lot for the sake of the gospel.
I know that you've sacrificed of your money and your time, and given of your talents.
I know that many of you have dedicated your lives to the service of your Savior, and that's commendable.
But the most important thing that we can do is to be in love with Him, to spend some time with Him, silent before Him.
To wash his feet, as it were, with the tears of our love, and to anoint his head with the oil of our appreciation.

And to count all else as worthless in comparison to knowing Him.

Repeat Chorus:

Insatiable Greed

Denes McIntosh

The restless winds, they seem to say
“We’ve been blowing since the dawning of our day.
And we’re growing weary, and we’re slowing down
And it’s very seldom now that we ever make a sound.”

Concrete
stretching miles beneath my feet
going where the money leads.

Soft earth
the place of my birth
covered by insatiable greed.

My head
is pounding from within,
I can’t believe a word that’s been said.

I’ve learned
politicians just take turns
dishonoring the dreams of the dead.

Glass towers
a tribute to power
erected by the phallic man.

We block out the sun
the sky has become
just a place to hang another fucking ad.

Hey, the Dakota died to live on this ancient land.
Don’t infect it.
Cochise and Crazy Horse fought the invading white man.
Come to expect it.
The Comanche rode to battle to save the buffalo.
Better respect it.
This used to be the land of the Navaho.
Accept it.

All of us are wounded
When one of us falls to our knees.

It Hurts Sometimes

Denes McIntosh

I know it hurts sometimes
I know it hurts sometimes
don't close your eyes, don't turn away
from that searing pain
there is no name for the sorrow.

I know it hurts sometimes
I know it hurts sometimes
don't turn away, don't run and hide
from the driving rain
from that hurricane
it will not harm you.

Chorus:
Take comfort in an old friend
you won't break, but by god you're gonna bend
you can make it now, I know you can
you're gonna be there in the end.

I know you want to cry sometimes
and you get high sometimes
don't give up and don't give in'
life gets cold as sin
when the candle dims
but love will warm you.

Chorus:

Repeat: Life gets cold as sin
when the candle dims
but love will warm you.

I know it hurts sometimes.

It's Up To You And Me

Denes McIntosh

Everybody's sayin' "got to be a better way
than the way that we been livin'.
But nobody's willin' to get on their knees and pray
thank God for the life that we've been given.

Chorus:
It's up to you and me to show them
there's a better life to lead
tell them God would like to get to know them
and Jesus Christ would like to set them free
just like He's gone and done for you and me.

People have been lonely now for such a long long time
they just don't know quite how to shake it
Everybody's lookin' for a little peace of mind
the just don't know quite how to make it.

Chorus:

And everybody's wishin' that the pain would go away
and lookin' for a place where they can hide it
But deep within the heart of man there's got to come a change
but everybody seems to want to fight it.

Chorus:

Jack Rap

Denes McIntosh

Now you’re One.
Being One is fun
for learning everything you can.
For standing on your own new feet
like a penguin.

For playing in the sand,
with a friend,
or on the swing, or on
the slide,
or in the pool with dad.

For doing things you’ve never done
from sun-up to sun gone.
For walking to your grandpa
on the grass, arms outstretched.
Or watching birds
while they watch you back.

Being One is about singing with your dad,
discovering a voice you never knew
you had.
Or drumming with your uncle
or reading with your mom,
or eating books, or new food,
or laughing with your grammie,
or having grandma(s) come to visit.
Or your Aunt show you how to draw.

Being One is for everything you can think of
that you haven’t thought of yet.
And that’s a lot, don’t ya think?
You bet.

Janis

Denes McIntosh

It touched me
just to hear her breathe
There was life in her breath
and hope in her dreams

It touched me
to hear her sing
She brought the humble to their feet
and the proud to their knees.

Chorus:
It was all about the way she felt
made the warm heart simmer
and the cold heart melt.
Life beneath the surface
and love beyond the battle field
She made the young heart bleed
and the old wounds heal.

It touched me
just to watch her dance
With fire in her belly
and a bottle in her hand

It touched me
how she laughed so free
in the summertime
when the livin' was easy.

Chorus:
It was all about the way she felt
made the warm heart simmer
and the cold heart melt.
Life beneath the surface
and love beyond the battle field
She made the young heart bleed
and the old wounds heal.

Jessica

Denes McIntosh

He calls you angel for your silken hair
your velvet skin, the smile you wear
He calls you angel, looks you up and down
convinced your feet never touch the ground.

He calls you angel for your clear blue eyes
the liquid way they hypnotize
He calls you angel, says you make him proud
but he's never heard you laugh aloud.

Chorus:
Your name is Jessica
I've seen your suffering
You call me on the phone
you tell me everything
The writings on the wall
it's written badly
He calls you "baby doll"
you call me "daddy".

He says you're beautiful
he says you're like a dream
He'd give his life for you
he'd buy you anything
He's quick to worship you
he would possess you
He holds you out for all the others
to inspect you.

Love ain't yours to pretend at.
It'll kill you in the end
if that's your way.

Jesus  Blues
Denes McIntosh

I want to tell you a story about a man a long time ago

He came down from heaven, his father's will to show

He taught us by example everything he wanted us to know.

But we would not believe him, not a word He said

And we would not free him, we chose Barabas instead

Then we hung him on a cross till we were sure he was dead.

Well, we took him off that cross and laid him in a tomb

but he rose 3 days later to save us from our doom

He's with the father now, but y'know he's comin' back real soon.

Chorus:

I found Jesus, he's deep inside my soul

I found Jesus, he's deep inside my soul

Well, I love him now, and he's with me everywhere I go."

Jesus is Coming Again

Denes McIntosh

Give him your talent
and give him your time
give him your strength
and give him your mind
give him your days
and give him your nights
give him your love
and give him your life

Chorus:
Jesus is coming again
Jesus is coming again
Jesus is coming again
coming to carry us home.

Give him your heart
and give him your hand
give him your woman
or give him your man
give him your home
or give him your land
give him your future
and give him your plans.

Chorus:

Jesus Never Fails

Denes McIntosh

Early in the morning before the break of dawn
I'm on my knees to see what Gods got goin’ on
I often need to ask him, "Lord teach me how to pray"
He always seem to answer "child I'm hearin what you say".

Before the worlds awakened I'm whisperin’ his name
wonderin' just how he always seems to stay the same
Askin' "won't you keep me through another busy day
Give to me the strength I need and lead me in the way.”

Chorus:
Jesus never fails me
Jesus never fails
He'll never leave me or forsake me
my Lord Jesus, He never never ever fails.

Early in the morning before the break of dawn
I'm puttin' on my armor for the fight that's goin’ on
I gird up my belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness,
helmet of salvation, good news shoes and all the rest.
My left hand takes my shield of faith
my right hand holds my sword
I begin the day he's given singin' praises to the lord.

Chorus:

Jewel of the Night

Denes McIntosh

Jewel of the night
she knows what's wrong, knows what's right
but she don't push it.
Walkin' in the light
with a smile she comes to fight
but she don't look it.

Chorus:
Draws you in unto her soul
holds you tight then let's you go
leaves you dancin' on your own
she likes to plant and watch it grow.
Likes to plant and watch it grow.

Jewel in the crown
she's been alone, she's been around
but she don't show it.
Listen for the sound
she's like the wind, she'll cool you down
but she don't know it.

Chorus:

Bridge:
She sleeps with the angels
wakes with the dawn
with a rainbow in her window,
the Rose of Sharon in her palm.

Chorus:

Judgement

Denes McIntosh

We're judging them
quick to condemn
and we don't ever look within.
We don't like what they're doin'
so we don't like them.

"God is on our side".
That's become our cry
and someday all those knees
are gonna bend.
They'll get theirs when Jesus comes again.

Chorus:
Ah but listen,
God is longing to love them
and He's lookin' far beyond their every sin
if Jesus had come just to condemn
then you and I could not have come to Him.

Why can't they see
how it's gonna be
hell was made to be
their final grave.
They can't blame me
cause I tried to get em saved.

Chorus:

Ah but listen,
God is longing to love them
and He's lookin' far beyond their every sin
if Jesus had come just to condemn
then you and I could not have come to Him.

Judith

Denes McIntosh

She told her jokes so smoothly
and played guitar so fine.
I wondered if she wondered if she knew me
long ago in some forgotten time.

40 years of living
brought her 30 years of pain
but wine and conversation
eased the heartache.

Chorus:
Judith I can see you
in the eyes of that lady on the stage.
Judith I can hear you in her sweet voice.
Judith I can feel you in the image
she portrays
and I miss you
and I want to sing with you again.

You traded secrets willingly
and gave the night a nod
you bared your soul
and would have bared your body.

Chorus:

Just a Matter of Time

Denes McIntosh

Before the bough begins to break
before the earth begins to shake
before the eagle kills the snake
It’s just a matter of time.

Before the strong displace the weak
before the faucet begins to leak
before the end of another week
It’s just a matter of time.

Before our bones begin to ache
before authentic becomes fake
before the ants devour the cake
It’s just a matter of time.

Before the rising of the creek
before the saints become the freaks
before we lose the will to speak
It’s just a matter of time.

Chorus:
We’ll be left with what we have
And it will bring us to our knees.
We’ll be left with only what we have
But it’s all we really need.

Before the paint begins to flake
before the sleeping dogs awake
before we’re burned at the political stake
It’s just a matter of time.

Before the chaff consumes the wheat
before the drummer drops the beat
before the proverbial twain shall meet
It’s just a matter of time.

Before we’re made wards of the state
before we’re stranded at the gate
before we meet our predictable fate
It’s just a matter of time.

Before the riots in the street
before we’re knocked back off our feet
before we wither in the heat
It’s just a matter of time.

Chorus:
We’ll be left with what we have
And it will bring us to our knees.
We’ll be left with only what we have
But it’s all we really need.

Just A Memory of Sam

Denes McIntosh

Why did you do me like this brother?
Have I not been your friend?
You had to clue me to the sum
of your unhappiness again.

You had no right to disappear,
Now your children bear the pain,
Was it fair to leave them standing
in the cold and driving rain?

You used my love as a cheap coat just to keep yourself warm,
to be discarded when you're finished, like a twenty dollar whore.
You've used your distance like a weapon to hurt me with again,
You're departure's nothing more now than a means to an end.

Why did you leave your family grievin'
just the same as Sam Stone?
The hole was in your heart my friend,
the pain was in your soul.
Was it time to walk away?
was it just time for you to go?
You let Jesus die for nothin’,
I suppose.

We'll do the best we can now.
we'll all do the best we can.
We'll build a fire together,
try and start the dance again.
We'll do the best we can now.
We'll all do the best we can,
gathered round the fire
with just a memory of Sam.

Last Night
Denes McIntosh

Last night, I dreamed there was a fire raging wild
Last night, I dreamed there was a fire raging wild
I don’t know from whence it came
I ain’t seen that kind of fire in a while.

Last night, I dreamed I was surrounded by the fire
Last night, I dreamed I was surrounded by that fire
I knew my time had come
When I heard the sound of that acappella choir.

Last night, smoke was thick across the blistering sand
Last night, smoke was thick across the blistering sand
I know you tried to reach me
But I could not quite hold on to your quivering hand.

Last night, I dreamed that you were dancing on my grave
Last night, I dreamed that you were dancing on my grave
You’d ‘save the last dance for me’
I remember that’s what you always used to say

Last night, I felt the fire burning deep inside
Last night, I felt the fire burning deep inside
It took me by surprise
Like a good burn brings a forest back to life.

Lay Me Down Slow

Josh McIntosh / Denes McIntosh

Spent time in many places
I come and go with the tide
Get all my money at the races
and I just let it ride.

Been called a man of many faces
but I just got two like everybody else
I got my own peculiar way
one man's heaven is another man's hell.

Chorus:
And if I can't stand
lay me down slow
Then lift me up easy
when it's time again to go.
And if I can't walk
when you take my hand
I'll talk to you softly
till you lay me down again.

I guess I been actin' crazy
I jump head first in the fire
My friends, they say I'm lazy
but I'm just tired.

Lovesick, cynical and strange
but I should get some points for tryin'
Been movin' steady towards a change
I feel inspired.

Chorus:
And if I can't stand
lay me down slow
Then lift me up easy
when it's time again to go.
And if I can't walk
when you take my hand
I'll talk to you softly
till you lay me down again.
